I just ended my hiatus on this blog and I’m getting almost 5000 views in just a week! That’s even more than what I get in a year and all of that could only happen because of the rising popularity of In A Good Way among international audience. I’m really glad that more and more people are enjoying In A Good Way as much as me.
Even though I may not be the most hardworking or talented blogger, I’ll try to post more In A Good Way goodies in the future and promise to become more active in this blog.
Let’s get back to our main topic! I’ve watched Ep5 of In A Good Way live just now and decided to post a review on it.
I’ll divide my review in two parts, the first part is our main couple, Chuan En and the second part will be our secondary characters, Ren Wei and Bai Xue. The recaps may not be in exact sequence so bear with me..
Beware of spoilers, contain quite a detailed summary.
So close yet so far..
Liu Chuan and Jia En:
Jia En is unable to memorize the girl’s routine of jitterbug dance due to her partner being a selfish person who only wants Jia En to dance the guy’s part to help her practice the girl’s routine. Thus, Jia En does not have enough time to practice the girl’s routine. It’s only natural that the kind Liu Chuan will act as the white knight to save
his princess our damsel in distress and they became dancing partners for the retest. Plus, he gets more excuses to spend time with Jia En, heh!
Bai Xue, Jia En, Tracy and Xiao Wei starts to discuss about their own idols as Tracy was showing off her new purchase, the same clothing that her idol, Namie Amuro wore on her album jacket. Bai Xue mentions about the upcoming audition for the school’s public relation team, it’s basically a team of girls who represents the school to participate in various kind of events. The criteria to be chosen is good service attitude, presentable and they need to be fluent in English. Bai Xue encourages Jia En to participate as her idol, Michael Chang (a well-known tennis player) is going to be present in those events. Not only that she’s able to meet her idol if she get chosen, being part of the team also means to be a honored student as she gets to wear the specialized uniform and represent the school. Although Jia En is not really confident but she decides to try for it anyways.
Jia En practices her speech in an empty classroom and Liu Chuan overhears and seems to be impressed at her effort. He went off to play basketball afterwards but during the break time, he remembers about Jia En who is still practicing her speech so he takes an extra water bottle and brings it to Jia En. At first, Jia En is embarrassed that Liu Chuan overhears her practice but quickly decide to use him as an audience to practice.
I was swooning like crazy because of this scene, Liu Chuan is being SO SO SO obvious about his own feelings. He can’t take off his eyes of her, totally in love and impressed! He even asked whether Jia En remembers that they’ll be having dance practice tomorrow, I can feel his excitement for “tomorrow” at that moment, LOL!
Next, we have the promised dance practice as the atmosphere turns sweet as they starts to hold hands and practice the steps. The eye-exchanges, giggles and smiles are just too sweet that I’ll get cavities. Bai Xue interrupts their dance by talking to Liu Chuan about some of the club activities that he have to handle. Liu Chuan nods and tell her that he’ll be there to take care of club activities after he finish the dance practice. Bai Xue understands and tells him that she’ll be waiting for him in the club room with a disappointed smile. She walks away with disappointment while stealing glances of them having fun together.
Liu Chuan is being very clear that he only cares about having fun with Jia En as he prioritize her dance practice over the club activities which he is supposed to be the president of the club. Club activities and Bai Xue’s interruption doesn’t stop him from wanting to spend more time with Jia En. Bai Xue was only trying to notify Liu Chuan about the club activities so she wasn’t interrupting them on purpose but she can’t help but to feel dejected by Liu Chuan’s immediate reply of only wanting to handle the club activities later.
Jia En goes to audition for the public relation team with her peers who came along to support her. Tracy, Xiao Wei, Bai Xue, Ren Wei and even Liu Chuan came along. Liu Chuan is really being TOOOO obvious in this episode as he came along without her asking, LOL. Plus, when Jia En was in the audition room, he was even more nervous than her. He almost seems like her husband who is waiting outside the delivery room (as some Taiwanese netizens were saying), hahaha!
However, she fails for the audition even though she is quite confident of her speech. Her mood turns sour and tries her best to hide her disappointment as her peers look at her worryingly. She convinces them that she’s totally fine and apologize for failing their expectations. She tells them to go back to their classes and walks away looking dejected.
Liu Chuan walks up to her and offers her a lollipop to cheer her up. But she stubbornly insists that she’s not unhappy while pouting. Liu Chuan can’t help to smile at her angry face, irritating Jia En who questions why is he laughing, is he laughing at her foolishness. Liu Chuan replies that he’s smiling because she’s too cute. Jia En who is still in foul-mood replies that if a girl is not pretty, people will compliment that she is elegant but when a girl does not even have elegance, people will say that she’s cute.
Liu Chuan rebuts her and says that he really think that she’s cute and when a person laughs at you is because he likes you. I died here, is that a semi-confession??!!!
The super dense Jia En replies that he stole that sentence from a movie’s dialogue and tells him to stop teasing her. She says he can laugh however he wants and Liu Chuan smiles at her adoringly as if he’s looking at a cute kid who is having a bad temper. I died again, can Liu Chuan stop being so adorable around Jia En!!!?
She starts to talk about her disappointment and she really thought that she have a chance as she really worked hard. Liu Chuan comforts her by saying that sometimes working hard alone is not enough to change the result and the judges must have their own reasons for that. Jia En starts to question him about whether he knows what is the reason. Liu Chuan just keep on nodding without replying to her question. Jia En finds his silence to be irritating and ushers him to tell her the truth. Liu Chuan starts to feel irritated and replies that the truth is she fails the audition and there’s no use to think about it anymore. The word “no use” definitely flares Jia En’s temper up, she angrily replies, “Fine! I’m useless!” and huffs off angrily, leaving Liu Chuan to be frustrated on his own.
Adding to his growing frustrations, Liu Chuan encounters his dad giving a speech to the campus. He ignores and walks past him, giving his dad the cold shoulder. He tries to contain his emotions when he’s back in the club but Jia En comes up to him wanting to apologize for the previous day.
She apologizes for the previous day and also for taking out her disappointments on him.
Liu Chuan is still in foul-mood because of his father’s appearance so even though he says it’s fine, he still looks unhappy. Jia En worriedly asks about if he have any dissatisfaction about her, he should say it directly. He replies saying that everyone has their own moods, there are days when it’s in a bad condition and he has his own troubles that she is unable to help. Jia En says that even so, he should not be so distant to her. She also says that he must be hiding something and he should tell her as they’re friends.
That finally hit his buttons and he counters that she’s the one that is hiding as all she thinks about is her failed audition and lock herself in a place where he can’t go in. He tells her to mind her own business and huffs off angrily. After quite a distance, Liu Chuan turns back and sees her walking off, looking dejected. He’s frustrated and questions himself why is he always unable to control himself when it’s about Jia En.
Jia En feels very awkward because of the fight she had with Liu Chuan the previous day and she wonders to herself whether Liu Chuan will appear to the dance test. She starts to dance without a partner but was glad to see Liu Chuan coming in late. They dance as practiced and starts to enjoy and have fun. For a moment, it seems like they totally forgets about their fight. For the final part, Liu Chuan holds Jia En’s waist and their eyes meet. They paused and stayed in position until the teacher interrupts them saying that it’s enough.
As they walk out of the building, Jia En tries to breaks the ice but Liu Chuan got a notification on his beeper and he hurries off as he bids her goodbye. It turns out to be his dad and It’s clear that he doesn’t like talking with his dad. His dad questions why did he ignore him the previous day when he clearly saw him. Feeling irritated, Liu Chuan replies that was because he doesn’t want others to know that he’s the son of a congressman and think that he gets a special treatment for it. He also reminds his dad about his promise to not interfere his life during the 4 years in college. His dad says he knows but he was invited by the university so he can’t simply reject their offer. He adds that Liu Chuan should not be acting this way as it sounds like he’s a criminal or something. Liu Chuan bids him goodbye and puts down the phone before his dad can finish.
Jia En sees that “3631” (Liu Chuan’s online id) is online and decides to chat with her online friend. Jia En confides to him about her bad mood as she recently got into a fight with a friend and asks whether everyone have a secret that they don’t want to speak about. 3631 replies that no matter what, holding secret is a painful experience and Jia En thinks back about the incident when the secret about her staying in Liu Chuan’s place overnight was outed by A-Di. She replies that she understands and ask him whether he got any tips to lift up the mood when someone feels down. He talks about the train line that just opened this year and ask her to try it. They chat the whole night in the BBS portal until the next morning.
Before she goes offline, she ask whether he knows about any shop in Taipei that sells delicious breakfast and he gives her an address. Because of her bad mood, she can’t sleep and decides to try out the breakfast shop that 3631 recommended. Liu Chuan is eating breakfast and suddenly hears a familliar voice. He turns back and is surprised to see Jia En who is buying breakfast for take-out. He continues eating without any intention to greet her, clearly still feeling awkward because of their fight.
Liu Chuan rides the metro but is so fixated on the view outside the windows that he doesn’t notice Jia En who enters the same train as him. Jia En also does not notice that she’s sitting across Liu Chuan as she is too excited on the view. They see the ray of light at the end of the tunnel and Jia En wows in amazement. It’s only then Liu Chuan notice her and asks what is she doing here. She replies that her online friend recommended her to take this train ride when she feels down and Liu Chuan smiles in an interesting way. It seems that he knows that Jia En is the online friend that he’s been chatting with. Then, It’s the end of the episode…
Thoughts on Chuan En couple:
Our main couple took a step forward and yet, also a step back in this episode. They experienced the fluttering hearts, disappointments, frustrations, regret and the awkward feelings that comes with their first quarrel. When you start showing your true temper to someone, it means either that person means something to you or is slowly stepping into your heart unknowingly. If Jia En and Liu Chuan were only considered as new friends in the past, then this time, they’re closer than ever before.
I feel that Liu Chuan is expressing what he truly thinks deep in his heart when he says that Jia En is locking herself up in a place where he cannot go in. It was the case for the this episode and also the case for their one-year separation when Jia En backed away after she heard him saying that she’s changing a target to cling on. This episode gave us some details about Liu Chuan’s background and he surely seems to be on bad terms with his dad. It is a nice change to see him cracking his usual cool exterior when it’s about his family and because it’s Jia En, the person whom he cares about that is asking him, he is unable to control his temper. If it was his other friends that asked him, he would probably remain calm and ignore their question.
Liu Chuan is becoming more and more obvious in expressing his adoration towards Jia En and It’s clear that he knows about his own feelings. I can feel their mutual attraction but I think that Jia En is still in the phase of mistaking her own growing feelings as just some kind of admiration towards the mature and independent Liu Chuan. Anyways, It was a great development for both of them as small quarrels can only make them understand each other better right? As long as there will be more Chuan En sweet moments in the future to make up for all these quarrels, I’ll be more than satisfied.
Brief Recap on Ren Wei & Bai Xue:
Bai Xue finds a mysterious tape in the empty clubroom and starts to listen to it. She seems to be quite enjoying the music that’s being played. Ren Wei smiles as he peeks outside the club room, it seems like his plan worked but our silly girl, Jia En interrupts Bai Xue in the worst timing ever and ruins the atmosphere. Ren Wei panics and storms into the Treasure hunting clubroom to ask Bai Xue to listen again as there’s more important parts behind and he just outed himself. Bai Xue coldly returns him the tape as she now knows who is the person behind the “mysterious” voice.
Thinking that his plan is about to fail, he runs out of the club room to get his guitar and serenades Bai Xue with the song “Crazy for Love”. The lyrics are asking her whether she dares to be crazy for love like him. The three musketeers who just arrive seems to be impressed at his effort and the students from the nearby clubs persuade her to accept him. Bai Xue rejects him by complimenting that he sings well and adds that it seems like he walks into the wrong club as this is not a rock&roll club. Even with the rejection, Ren Wei have no plans to back down and announces that he will be joining the Treasure Hunting Club. Everyone applauds for his courage and determination.
Ren Wei finally knows the proper way to chase a girl and he seems to have grown up by a little bit!! Maybe those love-tips in the book he borrowed are really useful. I’m very grateful to the writers for it as they’ve been writing him into such a pushy and foolish character when It comes to Bai Xue. At that rate, there is no way he’s going to get his dream girl. Bai Xue seems to be quite affected when she listens to the “mysterious” tape that Ren Wei had specially prepared for her and no girl truly dislike a romantic serenade right? It seems like there’s some hope for our loverboy, Ren Wei. At least he got a weapon to get the girl and that’s his nice voice.
