Does the cold temperature of winter signifies that it’s time for melo-romance? Because I remember SETTV’s Sunday drama last winter was Deja Vu (回到愛以前) and it had a melodramatic (or SETTV prefer to call it emotional romantic) tone. Melodramas are in my opinion the perfect bed for Makjang (狗血 aka overly-dramatic) germs infestation if they don’t do it right, yikes! SETTV had a successful record of producing a decent melodrama, Autumn’s Concerto (下一站，幸福), it was a lovely drama but that was back in year 2009/2010. Over the recent years, SETTV Sunday dramas’ qualities have dropped significantly and many tend to go haywire with lots of makjang in the second half of their stories. Thus, I lost my faith in SETTV Sunday dramas as even their lower-budget production, Monday to Friday 8pm timeslot dramas are much more watchable than their Sunday dramas. Truthfully, I’m just holding my breath for this one, not in a good way, but hoping it will be better than my expectations.
In Someone Like You (聽見幸福), Kingone Wang (Tie The Knot) will be playing as the owner of a department store group, Fang Zhan-Cheng who loses his eyesight through an accident with his rich fiancee, Liang Luo-Han played by Lorene Ren (In A Good Way). After becoming blind, he’ll be in the care of a nurse, Wang Yu-Xi, also played by Lorene Ren. These are definitely challenging roles for both as Lorene Ren takes on dual roles and Kingone Wang as a blind man.
I feel very mixed about this pairing because I’m so happy that Kingone Wang becomes the male lead again after so many times of being the second lead but at the same time, as much as I adore Lorene (Rong-Rong) as Jia-En in In A Good Way (我的自由年代), I’m a bit worried for her emotional scenes as it is not her strongest point. I have doubts about whether she is ready to transition to a more mature role that requires stronger acting. Her green acting skills worked in her favor in In A Good Way where she played a freshman in college and as it’s a coming-of-age story, unpolished acting are fine for it but serious melodrama needs her to do better than that. This premise sounds like there will be lots of tears-inducing scenes and I hope Lorene can handle that.
On the other hand, I’m not too worried about Kingone Wang’s acting as he’ve much more experience under his belt and he showcased his range through Black & White (痞子英雄) as a villain and other roles in many other dramas. He’ll definitely be very busy next year as he also have an upcoming TVBS drama, I am Chen Yi-Jun (我叫陳怡君) with Tammy Chen (Dragon Gate) where he plays the second lead. The script is the most worrisome element in this drama, SETTV loves to add unnecessary makjang elements into their Sunday dramas and the premise sounds like the perfect device to contain all the potential makjang plots.
Lorene and Kingone is a pair that have never crossed my mind but the poster looks so pretty so I’m hopeful about this pairing. I hope that their chemistry can overcome the potential flaws of a melodrama and engage me. It’s been so long since I last love an SETTV’s Sunday drama and I hope this will be the drama that breaks that Sunday curse.
Someone Like You (聽見幸福) is scheduled to follow after Say Again Yes I Do (再一次我願意) which will probably end in about 1 month later.
PS: Rong-Rong’s official English name is Lorene Ren as stated on her official facebook page, it’ not Kirsten Ren (Kirsten might be her old English name).
