Kingone Wang Goes Blind and Romances Lorene Ren in SETTV’s Upcoming Sunday Drama 聽見幸福 (Updated)

Does the cold temperature of winter signifies that it’s time for melo-romance? Because I remember SETTV’s Sunday drama last winter was Deja Vu (回到愛以前) and it had a melodramatic (or SETTV prefer to call it emotional romantic) tone. Melodramas are in my opinion the perfect bed for Makjang (狗血 aka overly-dramatic) germs infestation if they don’t do it right, yikes! SETTV had a successful record of producing a decent melodrama, Autumn’s Concerto (下一站,幸福), it was a lovely drama but that was back in year 2009/2010. Over the recent years, SETTV Sunday dramas’ qualities have dropped significantly and many tend to go haywire with lots of makjang in the second half of their stories. Thus, I lost my faith in SETTV Sunday dramas as even their lower-budget production, Monday to Friday 8pm timeslot dramas are much more watchable than their Sunday dramas. Truthfully, I’m just holding my breath for this one, not in a good way, but hoping it will be better than my expectations.

In Someone Like You (聽見幸福), Kingone Wang (Tie The Knot) will be playing as the owner of a department store group, Fang Zhan-Cheng who loses his eyesight through an accident with his rich fiancee, Liang Luo-Han played by Lorene Ren (In A Good Way). After becoming blind, he’ll be in the care of a nurse, Wang Yu-Xi, also played by Lorene Ren. These are definitely challenging roles for both as Lorene Ren takes on dual roles and Kingone Wang as a blind man.

I feel very mixed about this pairing because I’m so happy that Kingone Wang becomes the male lead again after so many times of being the second lead but at the same time, as much as I adore Lorene (Rong-Rong) as Jia-En in In A Good Way (我的自由年代), I’m a bit worried for her emotional scenes as it is not her strongest point. I have doubts about whether she is ready to transition to a more mature role that requires stronger acting. Her green acting skills worked in her favor in In A Good Way where she played a freshman in college and as it’s a coming-of-age story, unpolished acting are fine for it but serious melodrama needs her to do better than that.  This premise sounds like there will be lots of tears-inducing scenes and I hope Lorene can handle that.

On the other hand, I’m not too worried about Kingone Wang’s acting as he’ve much more experience under his belt and he showcased his range through Black & White (痞子英雄) as a villain and other roles in many other dramas. He’ll definitely be very busy next year as he also have an upcoming TVBS drama, I am Chen Yi-Jun (我叫陳怡君) with Tammy Chen (Dragon Gate) where he plays the second lead. The script is the most worrisome element in this drama, SETTV loves to add unnecessary makjang elements into their Sunday dramas and the premise sounds like the perfect device to contain all the potential makjang plots.

Lorene and Kingone is a pair that have never crossed my mind but the poster looks so pretty so I’m hopeful about this pairing. I hope that their chemistry can overcome the potential flaws of a melodrama and engage me. It’s been so long since I last love an SETTV’s Sunday drama and I hope this will be the drama that breaks that Sunday curse.

Someone Like You (聽見幸福) is scheduled to follow after Say Again Yes I Do (再一次我願意) which will probably end in about 1 month later.

PS: Rong-Rong’s official English name is Lorene Ren as stated on her official facebook page, it’ not Kirsten Ren (Kirsten might be her old English name).

When she was acts on In a Good Way her English name was Kirsten Ren. She might change her name after that.

In A Good Way’s poster stated Lorene Ren as her English name though. I also thought her English name was Kirsten Ren, all my old posts about her stated Kirsten Ren but I’ve changed them to Lorene Ren. See her English name in IAGW poster –

Yeah haha I noticed that too, but everybody was calling her Kirsten at the time so I kinda just went with it, and now I can’t picture her as Lorene even though I know that’s her official name, lol. It kinda sucks when Taiwanese celebs take on multiple English names; you end up not knowing what to call them. That’s why Xie Kunda is just Xie Kunda to me, not Ken or Penny or anything.

Love the poster; this pair is hitting all the right notes for me, at least visually. Like you, I don’t think that Kirsten has the emotional gravitas to do a melo, but I’m gonna tune in anyway, ‘specially since it’s been far too long since I’ve seen Kingone in anything!

And as much as I like to bag on Déjà Vu, I personally thought it had potential at the outset—hopefully this’ll be a good melo and put an end to SETTV’s streak of sh*tty Sunday dramas. (I Do² is okay, in the relative sense—just not great.)

I know! It’s hard to get used calling her Lorene, I actually prefer calling her as RongRong, haha! I watched a few episodes of Tie The Knot for Kingone Wang but ended up ditching it, can’t stand it.

Deja Vu actually have pretty visuals and the premise seems very interesting but the makjang was just so heavy that I was hesitant to tune in. After reading your final review about that drama, I think I’m just glad I didn’t tune in at all.

Anyways, I’m pretty excited for this pair but a bit wary about the story.

omg I had to do a double take at the premise of this drama XP I was like wait… Lorene is playing both characters??

and like the other commenters, I was confused that Lorene changed her name from Kirsten, but yeah she put Lorene as her name on instagram.

that poster is pretty! kinda giving me a that winter, the wind blows vibe, although the plot is different. I hope both of his dramas next year turn out good

    • carolies541 • 3 years ago

Kirsten might be her old name which was from dramawiki because IAGW poster also write her name as Lorene. I’m always confused when Taiwanese stars have so many English names, like Jasper used to be known as Max Liu, hah! The plot is like King Flower meets old-school HK romantic movie, 偷偷愛你, which stars Chingmy Yau as a nurse and Tony Leung as a rich man gone blind. Anyways, I updated the post with the official picture of that pretty poster! The poster is definitely fitting for the winter season.

I’m loving both of these posters. also lol at Max! I’m glad he changed his name to Jasper, the name stands out more.

Lorene is really pretty in that poster..
waaahh.. it’s been years since the last time i watched him as the male lead. i still think he suits antagonist character better than protagonist.. it’ll be good if he plays as an antagonist but still being the male lead.. maybe a psycho drama will be a good choice to improve his acting ability also :)

    • carolies541 • 3 years ago

I like him being the protagonist with a streak of antagonist in him (if that make sense), haha! Kingone Wang is actually very good in everything he does, even Fondant Garden where he played as the second lead. I just think he’s so underrated.
